Why your feed is now your most important SEO asset

Google's AI shopping engine doesn't crawl your category pages — it reads your Merchant Center feed. Incomplete attributes, price mismatches, or missing GTINs silently exclude your products from AI-generated recommendations, free listings, and Shopping placements. This checklist covers every attribute that matters, in priority order.

1. Product titles

Titles are the highest-impact attribute in your feed. Use this formula: Brand + Product Type + Primary Attribute + Secondary Attribute + Variant. Front-load the most important information in the first 70 characters (the carousel truncation point).

Good: 'Salomon X Ultra 4 GTX Men's Waterproof Hiking Boot — Black, UK 10'

Avoid: promotional language ('SALE', 'FREE SHIPPING'), all-caps, keyword stuffing, or vague descriptors like 'quality product'.

2. Descriptions

Write for Google's AI, not just for humans. Include material, use cases, compatibility, dimensions, and who the product is for. A description that mentions 'suitable for hiking and commuting in wet weather' will surface for both intent types. Aim for 500–1,000 characters minimum.

3. GTINs and product identifiers

Missing or invalid GTINs are a top cause of disapprovals. If your product has a barcode, it has a GTIN — submit it. For custom or handmade products with no GTIN, set identifier_exists to FALSE. Never leave it blank; blank signals missing data rather than an intentional product type.

4. Pricing and availability consistency

Google compares feed price and availability against your product pages continuously. Any mismatch triggers a disapproval. Use the Content API or scheduled fetches every 2–4 hours to keep data in sync, especially during sales and promotions.

5. Shipping and returns

Complete ShippingDetails and ReturnPolicy attributes unlock Google's fast-shipping filter and enable AI responses to shopper questions like 'will this arrive by Friday?' Merchants with complete data consistently win more AI recommendation placements than those without.

6. Images

Provide a minimum of three images per product: studio (white background), lifestyle, and detail shot. Main images must be at least 800×800px, no watermarks, no overlaid text. Multiple images increase AI confidence in product identification and improve click-through rate.

Quick audit: where to start

Open Merchant Center → Products → Diagnostics. Address account-level issues first. Then sort item-level issues by 'items affected' to prioritise the highest-impact fixes. Check the Products report for approved products with low impressions — these are your best optimisation targets.
